Model Mayhem is a website for model hopefuls where they can post their portfolios in the hopes of gaining modeling jobs, meeting some great photographers, having access to casting calls, and gaining some valuable industry contacts. It’s a place that you hope will help you get discovered basically. Model Mayhem is an excellent resource for all the aspiring models out there.
Model Mayhem also has it’s pitfalls because it has become a hunting ground for perverts and scam artists that prey on unsuspecting girls with stars in their eyes. Read the following quick tips on how to get the most out of Model Mayhem and stay safe.
First things first, and i’ve read this in other places too, please, by all means, remove your personal contact information. By posting your personal contact information you’re leaving the front door open for scammers to walk right in. Model Mayhem gives you an email inbox…USE IT! If you have a personal website or blog, do not post the address of it. It’s personal so keep it that way. You should only truly be posting the address to a portfolio site or promotional site which of course is used strictly for business. Model Mayhem gives you a lot of fields to enter in all types of personal information, but that doesn’t mean you have to use them. Scam artists, perverts, and pornographers are lined up to take down your information so they can contact you under the guise of being a legit agency. All you have to do is come to a “casting” or “photoshoot” and get half naked. Yeah right. Do yourself a favor and conduct yourself as a professional. Keep your private info private. Be smart.
Since Model Mayhem is a portfolio site among other things, make sure that you post some good and effective photographs. What constitutes a good and effective photograph for a model trying to gain the attention of an agency? Click here to look at these images posted by Elite Modeling Agency.
You don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for quality effective pictures. You want agencies to see you in a natural light. The images should be as close to the real you as possible. Don’t make the mistake of only posting half naked lingerie and swimsuit pictures of yourself. If you want to be a hiphop video model than that’s fine, but if you are not going for that then take heed to my advice. There’s nothing wrong with video modeling and hiphop modeling for men’s magazines and such. Just make sure you do it the right way. American Beauty Magazine will be featuring a full learning series on the ins and outs of successful hiphop modeling. But, not to be thrown off the beaten path, do not follow the masses when it comes to posting your portfolio on Model Mayhem. Follow the successful.
Now, onto the topic of working with photographers. Model Mayhem doesn’t have the tightest of requirements for someone to be listed as a “photographer.” I own a camera, therefore I can now say Im a “photographer” on Model Mayhem. Because of this, a lot of scammers and low life people looking to get a pretty girl naked are becoming more the norm than the exception on Model Mayhem. Be safe and be a professional. Check references. If you discover a complaint from one of the references, then hear it out and give the photographer a chance to respond. There’s two sides to every story and it might just be a misunderstanding. Always do your best to check references.
When dealing with Model Mayhem photographers or from anywhere for that matter make sure to have a contract ready to go. This should be for a commercial shoot or a free TFCD shoot. But, for right now we’re focused on TFCD since Im assuming that you’re just starting out. This can be mutually beneficial to both you and the photographer. Just make sure that your pictures don’t have the chance of popping up on some random porno site somewhere. Have your own TFCD contract stating the images can be used by both parties for portfolio purposes only and cannot be sold, traded, bartered, or given away without your express written and signed consent. Just google TFCD contract and you’ll be presented with a myriad of options that you can use to draft up. For the utmost in personal protection have your lawyer draft a contract for you. If the amateur photographer is worth his weight in salt then he’ll be happy to sign the contract.
After you have all these things in place, promote, promote, promote. Don’t stop until you reach your goals. Let everyone know about your portfolio that’s on Model Mayhem. Be smart and ignore the scammers and be all about business. Success will eventually come for you. When used in the correct way Model Mayhem can be an awesome tool. Just be smart about it as I’ve reiterated a thousand times now.
What other ways do you use Model Mayhem, or maybe even another portfolio site to promote yourself? What are some things you’ve done that have been successful. Let us know in the comments section.
